The Mechanical Engineering department was established in the year 1996, after bifurcation from PWD (R&B) and is headed by Chief Engineer (Mechanical) with its head quarter at Kohima. It is actively engaged in promoting mechanization of developmental works throughout the State. The background for creation of a separate wing under Works and Housing Department was to strengthen road construction and maintenance works, other developmental works and streamline the utilization of heavy machineries more efficiently. The department is one of the pioneers which took a substantial part in the development process of the state; it took part in many developmental activities of earth cutting works throughout the state, bringing road connectivity to the remotest part of the state. The department is responsible for maintenance and optimum utilization of Government heavy earth moving machineries and vehicles. Besides generating revenue through hire charges from Private Parties/ Agencies in our State, the department also extends co-operation during natural calamities and co-ordinates fully with the State Disaster Management Authority of Nagaland, for mitigation and early restoration of normalcy thereof.

 Objectives of the Department

  1. Revenue generation through optimum utilization of machineries.
  2. Conducting trainings for enhancing the skills of the field staffs within the department as well as to impart technical knowledge to the interested unemployed individual.
  3. To assist the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) by deploying machineries during natural calamities.
  4. Promotion of technologicaladvancement and economic growth through the efficient utilization of machineries.
  5. To act as a supporting agent in enhancing and accelerating the developmental activities within the state.

SERVICES 

  1. Assists PWD (Road & Bridges), PWD (National Highway), PWD (Housing) and NSDMA through machinery deployment for ongoing projects throughout the state.
  2. Road clearance during natural calamities like landslides, road blockages, etc. throughout the year for public convenience.
  3. Providingsupport through machineries to various Departments, public/agencies for developmental programme on hire basis.
  1. The department also participates in various developmental activities by deploying machineries and vehicles, thereby supplementing the state government’s revenue generation.
  2. With the Modern Mechanical Workshop & Training Centre (MMWTC) which is soon to be launched at Sukhovi, the department aims to provide training to enhance the skills of the field staffs within the department as well as impart training to the interested unemployed individuals.
  3. The department render services by allotting the machineries to the users (public/contractors) on per day hire basis as per the following Government approved rates.
